Let me preface this piece before people read the headline and respond thinking I’m saying that Black and other people of color (POC) should always lead diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) departments or initiatives. I’m not — especially if it’s solely for the sake of tokenism, but representation matter and so does cultural competency when dealing with American corporation’s lack of diversity in work, marketing, media and creative projects.
Disney recently announced the leaders of their “dual diversity councils” (CBR.com) and doesn’t this picture scream diversity?
Hey, did your stimulus check come today? Mine did — hooray! I don’t know about you, but I really needed this financial boost.
To my conservative sisters and mighty MAGA men who needed the money just a much as I did — please say a special, “thank you, sis” to Black women and Democrats, because they are really the ones who helped us out. You’re welcome!
House Republicans and 49 Republican Senators voted against the stimulus.
All jokes aside, if you’re having some financial issues or one of the 12 million people who filed for unemployment (and probably still waiting)…
Dr. Greg Carr said it best on Roland Martin Unfiltered — “we need the momentum of memory”.
It took Derek Chauvin 8 minutes and 46 seconds to nonchalantly murder George Floyd by pressing his knee to his neck and back in public. Derek Chauvin is on trial right now. The officer that pepper sprayed Army Lt. Caron Nazario in December, 2020 was only fired because the video just went viral in 2021.
Millions marched after George Floyd’s death, but now that things are returning to normal — we can’t be complacent. …
The author of Who Rules Philanthropy? Marc Gunther faced backlash which isn’t surprising considering the current political climate. However, when a reader accused him of “cherry picking” organizations to point out racial disparities in philanthropy, I felt compelled to respond.
If the accusation is true, perhaps all the philanthropy and nonprofit journals and data are wrong, too. …
These are the 4 words that capture my state of mind, mental capacity and financial status at the moment.
I can count on one hand how many nights I’ve had a good night’s sleep. I’ve spent most of 2020 literally by myself — separated and isolated from family and friends. I’m single with zero prospects and why would I even attempt to bring someone into my life in limbo?
I’m laid off, looking for jobs and contracts. Unemployment doesn’t answer calls or emails. …
Entrepreneurship is vital to the economy considering entrepreneurs and small businesses are often major employers and tend to circulate our money within our communities.
I can’t bring myself to watch the Derek Chauvin case. My heart and mind can’t take it. I see snippets on the news and get updates from friends and fellow writers, but I can’t watch it. According to mental health experts, the trial can be triggering to Black people as we see witness testimonies and repeatedly watching the video of Mr. Floyd’s torturous murder.
The case should be cut and dry — Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd. The video and every expert witness confirmed it.
I watched a few minutes of his girlfriend’s testimony and I had to cut it…
Devon you rock! I can't wait to see you grow as a writer and mental health advocate. Looking forward to being a guest on your podcast.

On April 7, 2021, Law.com reported that all charges were dropped against state Representative Park Cannon following a thorough review of the case. Rep. Cannon was arrested for knocking on Governor Kemp’s door when he was signing new voting laws in a closed door meeting.
While it’s debatable if the voter laws are actually what POTUS calls “21st Century Jim Crow…Jim Eagle Laws”, this situation is a glaring example of the danger and impact of biased police discretion and over-reach. The fact is Rep. Cannon never should have been arrested. She did nothing wrong and didn’t break any laws. Yet…
